Your Skin’s Recovery Journey: Mastering Microdermabrasion Aftercare for Flawless Results

Microdermabrasion is a transformative skincare treatment that reveals fresh, radiant skin by gently exfoliating the outermost layer of your epidermis. However, the real magic happens in the days following your treatment—when proper aftercare can make the difference between good results and exceptional ones. Understanding how to care for your newly revealed skin is crucial for maximizing benefits and ensuring optimal healing.

The Critical First 24-48 Hours: Your Skin’s Most Vulnerable Time

The first 24 hours after your microdermabrasion are the most important when it comes to ensuring the best possible results. During this period, your skin is particularly sensitive and requires gentle, thoughtful care. Your skin might be a little red, swollen or sensitive for up to 24 hours. This is completely normal and indicates that the treatment has successfully removed the outer layer of dead skin cells.

Avoid anything that raises your body temperature, such as hot showers, a sauna, steam rooms, and exercise for the first day after treatment. Your skin will be much more sensitive in the days after your treatment so avoid heavy exercise that causes you to sweat to avoid irritation for 24 hours. This precaution helps prevent inflammation and irritation that could compromise your results.

Essential Do’s for Post-Microdermabrasion Care

Gentle Cleansing and Moisturizing

After your microdermabrasion treatment, it’s important to keep your cleansing routine gentle. Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser to wash your face. Avoid using harsh skincare products that can cause irritation. Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers specifically formulated for sensitive skin.

Proper hydration is crucial during the healing process. Use SPF 15+ (at least) throughout a course of microdermabrasion to protect skin and regularly apply moisturiser to replenish moisture. If your skin does feel hot or dry and itchy – splash with cold water and apply a recommended moisturiser regularly.

Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable

A microdermabrasion removes dead skin, revealing the soft, new skin underneath. This new skin is particularly susceptible to the harmful rays of the sun. For sun safety and protection, as always, continue to apply an SPF 50+ sunscreen every four hours after a microdermabrasion – especially when outside.

We also recommend staying out of direct sunlight for at least 48 hours too as UV rays can damage your skin and slow the healing process down. Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Critical Don’ts: What to Avoid After Treatment

Skip Active Ingredients Temporarily

For 72 Hours: Do not use any anti-ageing creams, AHA’s, glycolics, retinol or exfoliating products. It’s best to wait 48 hours before applying any potent active ingredients like vitamin C serum. During the first two days, your skin is particularly sensitive, and using strong products can cause irritation. Also, avoid using retinols and glycolic acid during this period to prevent further sensitivity and ensure optimal healing.

Avoid Additional Exfoliation

In the week after your treatment, we recommend avoiding exfoliating skin care products. Microdermabrasion helps to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells on your face and removes the protective layer from the top of your skin. After microdermabrasion, you’re left with fresh and healthy skin cells and exfoliating these cells can cause skin irritation or hyperpigmentation. Give your skin time to recover from the treatment before you go back to using exfoliating products.

Steer Clear of Heat and Certain Activities

For 24 hours: No swimming, facial waxing or fake tan application and Up to 48 Hours after: No sauna, sun beds or sun exposure. These activities can cause irritation and potentially lead to complications during the healing process.

When Can You Resume Normal Activities?

You can wear makeup after your treatment but we recommend waiting for 12 hours. If you do decide to wear makeup during that time we recommend using mineral makeup as this is less likely to cause irritation.

Microdermabrasion typically requires about 24 hours for initial healing. During this period, you might notice some temporary pinkness or redness. This is normal and should subside within a day. For complete healing, it usually takes about 7 to 10 days, during which you should follow all aftercare instructions to avoid complications.
